Guiding Light: How To Keep Your Spirits Soaring
To keep your spirit high, you must know what brings you down. You will find it is the cravings and aversions in the mind—negative thoughts and emotions or unmet desires—that pull you down.
When energy moves upward within us, we feel cheerful, positive, light, and enthusiastic. And when that same energy starts going down, we experience heaviness, dullness, and restlessness. You don’t need to be afraid of these low feelings, they rise and fall in cycles, based on our natural constitutions.
When you feel low on energy, see if your diet is balanced and in moderation; see if you are sleeping enough (about 6-8 hours a day); see if you are practising breathing techniques like pranayamas and Sudarshan Kriya; and lastly, see if you are meditating daily to settle the mind and bring it back to the source.
There’s another way to raise your life force, and that is through serving others. I don’t think there’s a single person on this planet who is devoid of compassion. We simply forget to express it.
Our minds are subtle and sensitive. We catch the vibrations of those around us. Our vibrations convey more than our words. For example, if you sit with someone angry or complaining, you’ll carry a bit of that with you. And if you spend time with a happy baby, you carry that joy as well. We pollute the environment not just physically but mentally and emotionally too.
So, how do we purify our own vibrations? Meditation is the most effective and effortless way to cleanse our vibrations of all negativity.
Another way to uplift yourself is by engaging in meaningful and creative art. Don’t just sit and watch, but participate fully without worrying about how it is perceived.
And look back at your own life: haven’t you come through situations when you thought you were never going to make it? You worried last year and the year before. And yet here you are, complete in yourself. So know that events cannot touch you.
Have faith, it is your greatest blessing.
Happiness is not alien to you. You are born happy. Every baby radiates joy. We simply forget along the way as we grow up. With simple practices, some breathing and meditation, we can uncover that innocence and joy again in no time!
