Skill-based polytechnic edu ensures jobs in 3 years: Expert
In conversation with The Tribune, Dr Jagroop Singh, Principal of Mehr Chand Polytechnic College, Jalandhar, highlighted that while many BTech graduates face unemployment due to a shortage of suitable jobs, diploma holders from polytechnic institutions rarely struggle to find employment.
A polytechnic is an educational institution offering skill-based, practical training courses to students who have passed the 10th or 12th grade. These courses enable students to secure jobs in relevant fields or start their own businesses. Most courses last three years, though some diploma or post-diploma programs-especially for 12th-grade medical or non-medical students-are two years. Upon completion, students receive diplomas from recognised boards or universities. In countries like Britain and Germany, polytechnic colleges have even been granted university status.
The question arises: Who should pursue polytechnic education amid numerous degree colleges, B Tech institutes and universities? According to NEP 2020, skill education is vital for every student after Class VIII. As the saying goes, “Skill exists in everyone; in some it remains hidden and in others, it shines.”
Students who want to support their families, build careers quickly, or gain hands-on experience after 10th grade find polytechnic education valuable. Completing a diploma in three years equips them to earn a livelihood or support their families. Those without urgent career needs or from financially secure families might opt for longer higher education pathways like B Tech, MTech, MA, B Ed, LLB, or PhD, which take more time to lead to employment. Importantly, polytechnic education also serves as a parallel platform for higher studies-diploma holders can later pursue B Tech, MTech, or PhD Diplomas are more affordable than BTech and other degree courses, making them accessible for middle- and lower-income families aspiring to help their children become engineers and fulfil their dreams. However, pursuing diplomas from recognised institutions is essential.
Many students face disappointment after 12th grade due to tough exams like JEE (Main). Polytechnic diplomas provide an alternative, enabling direct lateral entry into B Tech courses without clearing JEE (Main). Moreover, polytechnic students can work part-time in industries while studying, helping manage their fees. Polytechnic education emphasises drawing, workshops and practical work over theory, making it easier for average-merit students to succeed. Rural students, who tend to be more active, excel in lab practicals, workshops and projects. Polytechnic education is also especially beneficial for girls and differently-abled students.
To support students further, the Punjab State Board of Technical Education will print diploma textbooks in both English and Punjabi from the upcoming session, aiding those from rural and backward areas. Additionally, the board has converted the 6th-semester into internship, recognising that practical training is essential. Polytechnic education is crucial for students aiming to work abroad. Skilled students with recognised certificates find jobs more easily, earn better salaries, gain respect and enjoy a higher quality of life. In contrast, those who go abroad after 10th or 12th without skills often end up facing hardships.
Dr Singh advises students: “Whatever skill you choose, commit to it with honesty and hard work. Dedicate yourself to practical training and respect your teachers.”
