8 more roads in city to be declared as ‘no-tolerance zones’
Drunken driving, triple riding on two-wheelers, driving without licence and encroachments on public roads, all such violations will not be tolerated by the city police as they are going to declare eight more prominent roads in the city as ‘no-tolerance zones’ in coming three days.
Talking to The Tribune, Commissioner of Police (CP) Swapan Sharma said the police were going to impose Section 144 of the CrPC on the eight roads, which means, no rehri/ferri would be allowed on the stretches, none would be allowed to drive after drinking, without licence or triple riding, etc.
“No tolerance means, we are going to act tough against the violators as these are extremely busy roads and we cannot allow defaulters to risk lives of people,” he said.
The CP said about 45 days ago, eight other roads were declared ‘no-tolerance zones’.
“In connection to the same, we have challaned 58 persons in the past 45 days. Besides, 102 persons were issued notice to remove their encroachments (rehris, ferris, everything). Among the 102, 40 persons were issued warning notices for the second time. Now, third notice would not be issued but an FIR would be registered against the habitual defaulters. We want to streamline everything as far as traffic violations are concerned on these roads,” Sharma said.
The eight roads which will be declared as ‘no tolerance zones’ in the next three days include: Local Adda to Clock Tower to Chaura Bazaar, both sides to Book Market and Girja Ghar Chowk to Kesar Ganj Mandi; Buddha Nullah Bridge to Jalandhar Bypass; Tajpur Road cut to Amrit Dharam Kanda Chowk; Cancer Hospital Road to Water tank, Sherpur Road; Rishi Dhaba to Gill Chowk, both sides; Dhandra Road, Jain Mandir to Manakwal Gate; Aarti Chowk to Ghumar Mandi Chowk; Rajpura Chowk to Hambran Road Sabzi Mandi to Kali Mata temple to Bhuri Wala Gurdwara to Haibowal police station.
