Exposure visit organised for farmers to promote natural farming practices
In a significant step towards promoting sustainable agriculture, the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Mandi, organised a ‘Farmer Exposure Visit Programme’ under the leadership of project director Rakesh Patial.
The initiative targeted farmers practicing Bharatiya Prakritik Krishi Paddhati (BPKP) from Seri Kothi and Maloh gram panchayats in the Sundernagar block. Approximately 70 farmers participated in the programme aimed at encouraging natural farming methods.
As part of the programme, the participating farmers from Sundernagar were taken to demonstration plots in Bilaspur district on Saturday, where local farmers successfully practice natural farming techniques. The visit provided a hands-on learning experience, allowing the growers to observe and understand the practical applications and benefits of natural farming.
Officials from the Agriculture Department highlighted the key advantages of natural farming, including production of healthy, chemical-free crops; improvement of soil fertility; water conservation through mulching and organic techniques; low-input, high-return farming systems; eco-friendly practices that reduce environmental impact; effective pest and disease control without synthetic chemicals; and sustainable and resilient farming for long-term self-reliance.
The programme focused on natural farming, which is not only a cost-effective approach but also plays a crucial role in preserving environmental balance and enhancing farm profitability. The visiting farmers were inspired to adopt these methods and incorporate them into their agricultural practices.
A special interactive session was also held, wherein farmers from Bilaspur and Sundernagar shared their experiences and discussed the challenges and successes of natural farming. The knowledge exchange enabled farmers to learn from each other and build networks for future collaboration.
The event was graced by the presence of Hitender Thakur, deputy project director; Sanjay Kumar and block technology manager Lekhraj, who provided expert insights and guided farmers throughout the visit.
This exposure programme marks a progressive step in Himachal’s broader mission to promote natural and sustainable agriculture, empowering farmers to become more self-reliant and environmentally conscious.
