'I'll have To Pay Huge Price...': Modi Says India Is Ready As US Tariffs Come Into Effect

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that the interest of the country's farmers is a top priority for the government, adding that India will never compromise on it.

Modi made the remark amid stiffening ties with the US over tariffs as President Donald Trump announced a 25 per cent duty on imports from India plus penalties, which came into effect on Thursday.

Trump slapped India with the import levies for its trade import of oil from Russia amid the Ukraine war, and maintained a neutral stance on it.

Reacting to the imposition of tariffs, Modi said India is ready for its fishermen, farmers, and dairy farmers.

"For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority," said the Prime Minister at the inauguration of the Swaminathan Centenary event in New Delhi.

"India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen and dairy farmers. I know personally, I will have to pay a heavy price for it, but I am ready for it. Today, India is ready for the country's farmers, fishermen and dairy farmers...," he added.
