Bihar SIR | After CEC Gyanesh Kumar's '0' address for homeless claim, CPI(M) MP John Brittas asks does 'ABCDEFG' for parents' name mean...

The opposition INDIA bloc has heightened protests against the Election Commission over alleged discrepancies in the electoral roll and demanded that the Commission should provide better answers to its questions rather than demanding affidavits from its leaders.

The INDIA bloc leaders are mulling moving an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and accused him of bias towards the Bharatiya Janata Party. The Opposition's move comes a day after Kumar sought to demolish the 'vote theft' allegations levelled by Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders, citing provisions of the Constitution and clauses of electoral laws.

Chief Election Commissioner Kumar addressed a press conference on Sunday and dismissed all allegations levelled against the poll body by the Opposition. The CEC served a seven-day ultimatum on Gandhi to submit a signed affidavit to back his claims, else his allegations will be considered baseless and invalid.

On CEC Kumar's claims that the address was mentioned '0' for voters who were homeless, Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP John Brittas asked whether the CEC apply the same logic for voters whose parents' names were just some random letters. Brittas told ANI, "Gyanesh Kumar has spoken at least one fact and truth. He said that crores of people are on the streets, they don't have houses. So, their house number is 0." He added, "Will he say there are crores of people who do not have parents, they are orphans, and that's why their parents' name is ABCDEFG? He has to explain that also."

Accusing the Commission of bias, Brittas said the Commission should merge with the BJP so that the country saves its resources. "Why should we need to pay so much of taxes to run such institutions that are B team of the political party?" the Left MP asked. Brittas charged that CEC Kumar spoke like a politician, and the country has lost its trust and confidence in a constitutional position.
