Lahaul-Spiti MLA orders overhaul of inactive panels

In a strong push for better governance and accelerated development, Lahaul and Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana chaired a joint review meeting of the Project Approval Committee (PAC) and Forest Rights Act (FRA) committee at Kaza yesterday. The meeting also included a review of the Special Area Development Authority (SADA) to assess ongoing projects and address public concerns.

Residents raised serious concerns about non-functional village-level FRA committees in the Spiti valley, which had led to delays in processing land and housing claims under the Forest Rights Act. Responding firmly, MLA Rana directed the immediate dissolution of inactive committees and their reconstitution, ensuring that genuine public claims reach the appropriate authorities without delay.

She reviewed the performance of various developmental departments and made it clear that water, roads, health, education and electricity would remain her top priorities. Emphasising strict accountability, she warned that any negligence in these essential services would not be tolerated.

MLA Rana instructed officials to maintain regular coordination with local representatives and ensure timely updates on project progress. The electricity department was asked to complete all essential work before snowfall, to avoid disruptions during winter months.

Addressing issues of inefficient construction, the MLA cautioned the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) against building unnecessary retaining walls and culverts, which she said lead to wastage of public funds and adverse effects on local livelihoods.

She also issued orders for removal of debris from agricultural fields and irrigation canals and called for increased transparency and accountability across departments.

“Every officer and employee must work with honesty and dedication so that people do not face hurdles in accessing basic government services,” said Rana.

She reiterated her commitment to the overall development of Lahaul-Spiti, with a focus on the timely delivery of schemes and effective redressal of public grievances.
