Madhya Pradesh: Engineering student dies after allegedly being beaten by two constables in Bhopal

A 22-year-old engineering student died after being beaten allegedly by two police constables in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, The Hindu reported on Friday.
Udit Gaayki, a final-year B Tech student, was reportedly assaulted around 1.30 am on the night of Thursday and Friday while returning from a party.
The two police personnel, identified as Santosh Bamniya and Saurabh Arya, who were on night patrol, have been suspended, Deputy Commissioner of Police Bhopal Zone-2 Vivek Singh told The Hindu.
“They had broken a bottle on the road after which the constables on bike patrolling approached them,” the newspaper quoted Singh as saying. “While the other two boys fled on their two-wheeler, Udit started running after seeing the cop.”
He added that the police personnel caught hold of him in a lane where the alleged assault took place.
One of the student’s friends told The Indian Express that he was driving Gaayki home after the party when police spotted them. Gaayki ran, and the officers chased after him.
The friend told the newspaper that he then heard “sounds of fighting”, and when they reached the spot, Gaayki’s “shirt was torn and his body was covered in marks, especially on his head”.
The friends alleged that the constables demanded Rs 10,000 in bribe to stop the assault, The Indian Express reported.
