NIA using AI to reconstruct sequence of events
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to reconstruct the sequence of events surrounding the Pahalgam terrorist attack. Sources familiar with the investigation said, based on eyewitness accounts, photographs and videos collected over the past week, investigators are using AI to piece together a clearer picture of how the attack was planned and executed.
According to sources, this will help accurately trace the terrorists’ movements and modus operandi. On April 22, the attackers gunned down 26 persons in a brutal assault.
Investigators are also analysing satellite imagery of Baisaran Valley — where the attack occurred — to create a real-time simulation of the events using AI. This reconstruction is expected to play a crucial role during legal proceedings, sources added.
In addition to AI, forensic evidence is being gathered, and 3D mapping technology will be employed to create a comprehensive and foolproof model of the crime scene, they said.
Meanwhile, NIA Director General Sadanand Date visited the attack site on Thursday. He also reportedly held discussions with senior agency officials leading the investigation. The NIA formally took over the probe on April 27. Following the attack, a team of NIA officers led by an Inspector General was dispatched to assist the local police, and NIA teams have since been stationed at the site.
