Lord Rama and Lakshman stayed here during exile
Gupt Godavari is one of the most spiritually important places in Chitrakoot. It is believed that during exile, Lord Rama and his brother Lakshman stayed here and even held court inside these caves. The story of demon Mayank, who tried to spy on Sita while she was bathing, is also connected to this place. Lakshman punished him by turning him into stone, and that dark rock can still be seen on the cave ceiling.
Inside the cave, there are natural stone thrones which are believed to be of Rama and lakshaman, a small pond known as the sitakund and several sculptures and small temples dedicated to Brahama, Vishnu and shiva. The flowing water inside the cave, a peaceful silence, and the beautiful carvings make it a powerful spiritual experience.
