World Red Cross Day: Commemorating the spirit of humanity

On May 8 every year, World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is observed as a tribute to the unwavering dedication of the volunteers– to the communities they serve, the principles they uphold, and the people they assist and protect.

Significance:

The date May 8 was chosen as it falls on the anniversary of the birth of the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Henry Dunant. ICRC is one of the world’s largest humanitarian networks, and it works to provide aid to people around the world. The day does not just honour the achievements but also remembers the service the volunteers provide in times of need in disasters, for their assistance in hard-to-reach areas.

History:

The Battle of Solferino was the largest battle since the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. Henry Dunant, who witnessed the Battle of Solferino, wrote a book, A Memory of Solferino. The idea for this memorable day was founded after the First World War. It was officially established after World War II. May 8, the birth anniversary of the founder, Henry Dunant, became the day to honour the Red Cross Moment. The International Red Cross Day became known as the ‘Red Cross and Red Crescent Day’ in 1984.

Theme:

The theme for this year is 'Keeping Humanity Alive'. It honours the people who give their blood and sweat to ease the suffering of others and protect their dignity even in the face of danger.

Several Red Crescent staff and volunteers had suffered to protect the people in a natural and armed disaster. According to International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), since September 2023, a total of 28 Red Cross and Red Crescent staff members and volunteers have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The day is also a reminder of the harsh truth that is hard to swallow: the enormous risk faced by these humanitarian workers and their sacrifice.
