Adani Power, Tata Power, Vedanta Group, JSW Energy, and Torrent Power are those private companies which are making a comeback in the thermal power sector after almost five years. India may need at least 80 GW of new coal-based power generation capacity by 2031-32. Government companies like Coal India Limited (CIL), was not involved in power generation but now trying to enter in the thermal power business.

On April 21, CIL announced its collaboration with Damodar Valley Corporation to set up a 1,600 MW ultra-supercritical power plant in Jharkhand. Earlier, also CIL had announced two thermal power plants in Madhya Pradesh and Odisha.

Over rising demand for coal-based power projects, government company BHEL also witnessed a surge in orders. BHEL designs, manufactures, and installs equipment for thermal power plants. In the electricity sector, BHEL’s order book is increased by 63% to Rs 1,57,922 crore by FY 2025. For FY 2024, this figure was Rs 96,731 crore.

What Is Adani Power’s Plan?

On April 30, Gautam Adani led Adani Power informed its investors of its plans to increase thermal power capacity by 13.12 GW to reach 30.67 GW by FY 2032. Company’s current capacity is at 17.5 GW. By FY 2032, Adani Power plans to expand its design capacity to 388 GW as per the peak in demand.

Vedanta, JSW Energy, and Torrent Power’s Preparations

JSW Energy also started construction on its largest greenfield power plant in Salboni, West Bengal, with a total capacity of 1,600 MW. Anil Agarwal led Vedanta is building two plants in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh with a combined capacity of 1,300 MW. Torrent Power also announced in January its plans to build a 1,600 MW coal-based thermal power plant in Madhya Pradesh.
