Indian-origin Vaibhav Taneja, Tesla’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), has earned a staggering USD 139 million in total compensation in 2024 — making it the highest in the world for any CFO, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. Vaibhav’s pay package far outstripped that of many prominent tech CEOs, including Microsoft’s Satya Nadella and Google parent Alphabet’s Sundar Pichai. It is important to note that a major chunk of this pay package comes from stock options and equity awards granted following his promotion, far surpassing his base salary of USD 400,000.

The salary pay package exceeded the earnings of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, placing Taneja in the spotlight as one of the most highly paid finance executives in corporate history.

Vaibhav’s massive payout not only eclipsed both but also shattered the previous CFO pay record of $86 million set by Nikola’s then-CFO in 2020 — before the hydrogen-truck maker filed for bankruptcy this year.

Vaibhav’ record-breaking compensation comes at a pivotal time for Tesla, as the company faces mounting challenges — including narrowing profit margins, increased competition in the EV market, and falling vehicle deliveries. In the first quarter of 2025, global deliveries dropped by 13%, while net profit plummeted by 71%, marking Tesla’s first year-over-year decline in deliveries in more than ten years.
