WATCH: Suryakumar Yadav’s special gesture, holds umbrella for Harsha Bhogle as rain disrupts presentation ceremony
New Delhi: Mumbai Indians secured the final IPL 2025 playoff spot with a decisive victory against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday, May 21. Suryakumar Yadav’s match-winning 73 runs off 44 balls earned him the player of the match award. Following the game, he showed a kind gesture towards interviewer Harsha Bhogle.
During a rain-soaked IPL 2025 match at the Wankhede Stadium, Suryakumar Yadav shared his umbrella with commentator Harsha Bhogle before receiving his long-awaited award after 13 games. The interview commenced immediately after the presentation.
Suryakumar Yadav’s impressive 73 runs off 44 balls, featuring powerful shots, propelled Mumbai to victory after they were struggling at 132/5 in the 18th over. His crucial 57-run partnership with Naman Dhir in the final two overs, which included 48 runs, secured him the well-deserved Player of the Match award.
“Was important for a single batter to bat till the end,” he said. “We knew there was one over of 15–20 runs somewhere, so we had to wait till the end. The way Naman came in and shared that energy with me was also a turning point.”
Mumbai Indians secured their 11th IPL playoff berth, a record for the tournament, defeating Delhi Capitals by 59 runs. Delhi, needing a victory to maintain their playoff hopes, were bowled out for 121 after struggling from the outset. Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Santner were particularly effective for Mumbai, each taking three wickets.
The post-match scene, as players and supporters sought cover beneath umbrellas as the rain started, became a memorable moment for spectators despite the thrilling game that had many noteworthy incidents. The game was played in fair weather because the rain that was expected later didn’t come until after the game was over.
On May 26, the Mumbai Indians will play the Punjab Kings in their last league game in Jaipur with the goal of finishing in the top two. The Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Titans, and Punjab Kings have all guaranteed playoff spots.
