Priyank Kharge Slams BJP's Chalavadi Over 'Dog' Remark; Congress Supporters Stage Protest

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge has strongly condemned BJP Legislative Council Opposition Leader Chalavadi Narayanaswamy for an alleged derogatory comment likening him to a dog. Speaking to reporters before participating in a Tiranga Yatra in Chittapur, Kharge questioned whether such a remark was befitting of someone aspiring to national recognition.

Narayanaswamy’s controversial remark, made in response to Kharge’s earlier criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, referenced a Kannada saying suggesting that a barking dog cannot disturb an elephant, as reported by India Today.

Though commonly used to convey indifference to criticism, the analogy drew sharp backlash from Congress supporters, especially in Chittapur—Kharge’s political stronghold.

Congress Workers Protest

Angry party workers attempted to confront Narayanaswamy at a government guesthouse in Chittapur, but police blocked their entry, averting a direct confrontation. Protesters then staged a sit-in outside the premises, continuing into the evening. Following the uproar, Narayanaswamy expressed regret for his comments, reported The New Indian Express.

Kharge Vs Chalavadi

Taking to social media platform X, Kharge outlined a pattern of what he described as personal and caste-based attacks from BJP leaders. He recounted past instances where he was labeled a “convent Dalit,” had his gender identity mocked, and was targeted over his intellect—accusations he said reflect the BJP's “deep-seated intolerance” toward him.

In a counterattack, Karnataka BJP president BY Vijayendra criticised the Congress government, calling the disruption of Narayanaswamy’s visit a “blatant attack on the rights of an opposition leader.” He accused the ruling party of failing to provide security to a constitutional officeholder, comparing the situation to an era of political emergency. Vijayendra warned that if Chief Minister Siddaramaiah does not take action against those responsible, it would suggest a feudal mindset and raise questions about his own role in the matter.
