Ashoka varsity’s prof released on bail from Sonepat dist jail
Ashoka University’s Associate Prof Ali Khan Mahmudabad, who was arrested for allegedly making remarks regarding Operation Sindoor, was released from Sonepat district jail on Thursday evening.
The Director General of Police (DGP), Haryana — in compliance with the Supreme Court order — formed a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Mamta Singh, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Crime and Commissioner of Police, Sonepat, to conduct investigation into the two cases registered at Rai police stations. The two members of the SIT are two IPS officers — Ganga Ram Punia, SP, Karnal, and Vikrant Bhushan, SP, Special Task Force (STF), Gurugram.
The SIT has been directed to complete the investigation and submit the report at the earliest.
The Supreme Court had on Wednesday granted interim bail to Mahmudabad. On Thursday, the advocates of the professor began legal proceedings for his release. Chief Judicial Magistrate Neha Goyal ordered the release after they furnished bail bonds and two sureties in court.
Kapil Dev Balyan, one of the advocates of Mahmudabad, said that the court has accepted the professor’s bail on the condition of Rs 1 lakh bail bonds and two sureties. The release orders reached the Sonepat district jail around 4.30 pm after proper documentation. Mahmudabad was released from the district jail around 5pm.
His family members were already present at the gate of the district jail and a car was already parked near the gate. The professor came out, sat in the car and went away without saying anything.
The Rai police had arrested Ali Khan Mahmudabad on Sunday morning after registration of two cases -– one (FIR number 146/2025) on the complaint of Yogesh Jatheri, BJYM general secretary and sarpanch of Jatheri village and another case (FIR number 147/2025) registered on the complaint of Renu Bhatia, Chairperson, Haryana State Commission for Women (HSCW), for allegedly making remarks regarding Operation Sindoor at a social media platform. The police produced him in court the same day and the court allowed two days police custody.
The Rai police produced the professor in court on Tuesday afternoon and the court sent him to judicial custody in Sonepat district jail. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to the professor but it reached late at Sonepat.
