Delhi-NCR Rain: Heavy rain with thunderstorm in Delhi, water filled in many parts; IMD issued warning
On Saturday, the India Meteorological Department had issued a red alert for Delhi and surrounding areas, warning of strong thunderstorms, rain and strong winds in the next 2 to 3 hours. In view of the deteriorating weather, the Meteorological Department has appealed to the residents to take necessary precautions
The national capital Delhi witnessed heavy rain and thunderstorm in the early hours of Sunday. After this, there are reports of severe waterlogging in many parts of Delhi. According to news agency ANI, the affected areas include Moti Bagh, Minto Road and areas around Delhi Airport Terminal 1. The Nanakpura underpass is flooded. Apart from Delhi, many parts of Jhajjar in Haryana also received heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms. The NCR region is also drenched in rain.
Earlier on Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for Delhi and adjoining areas, warning of strong thunderstorms, rain and strong winds in the next 2 to 3 hours.
The IMD had said, a stormy area is approaching Delhi and adjoining areas from the west/northwest. Under its influence, there is a possibility of strong thunderstorms or dust blowing wind activity along with frequent lightning and strong winds at a speed of 40-60 km/h or more in some parts of the city in the next 1 to 2 hours.
What is IMD’s appeal to the people
In view of the deteriorating weather, the Meteorological Department has appealed to the residents to take necessary precautions. The IMD has warned people to avoid open spaces and not to take shelter under trees. Citizens have also been asked to avoid weak walls or unstable structures and stay away from water bodies. Possible effects of the storm include uprooting of trees and breaking of branches. Crops like bananas and papayas may be damaged. Dust storms may also occur in some parts of the city.
Recently on Wednesday, a group of clouds entered North Delhi and moved towards south-southeast, causing dust storms and strong winds. The wind blew at a speed of 50-60 kmph, which increased to 70 kmph. Power supply was disrupted in many areas of the capital after a strong dust storm in parts of Delhi, followed by thunderstorms, hail and rain.
